Taiko Ensemble Workshop Notes
This is a piece I wrote called “Sound of the Earth” that premiered on April 19, at Wellesley College Jewett Auditorium, and was written with the following criteria in mind:
1. Playable by 10+ taiko drummers with 1-2 years experience
2. Not tied to any particular taiko style
3. Upbeat and fun – a piece taiko players would want to perform
4. Sounds good when played by amateur players, sounds great when played by pros
This was a really difficult one to compose because of all the requirements, but I feel it does a good job of combining traditional taiko with world percussion, and allows the player to learn not only traditional taiko repertoire, but samba, Afro-Caribbean, and African rhythms as well.
Please let me know if you or your group would be interested in learning and performing this piece or in a taiko ensemble workshop. I currently offer lessons at my studio in Echo Park, Asano Taiko US in Torrance, and via Skype.
