Benefits of Learning Taiko

Speaking in very broad strokes, you can expect the following three types of benefits when you learn taiko.

  1. The first type of benefits are the physical and mental health benefits.  Taiko drumming is a very physical activity that involves your entire body.  Taiko drumming can help you burn calories, build muscle, and improve your cardiovascular health.  In addition to improving your physical health, taiko can also be an activity that calms the mind.  When you focus on playing taiko, you forget about the noise and stress that has become a part of modern life.
  2. The second type of benefits are social and emotional.  Taiko is a great way to connect with Japanese culture and society.  Taiko is also a great way to meet other people who share an interest in music and cultural experiences.  Through taiko, I’ve been able to meet so many wonderful people, and experience so many wonderful things.  Taiko is like a key that unlocks doors to music, Japanese culture, and allows you to meet new people.
  3. And finally, the third type of benefits are the intangibles. I’ve seen people develop grit, acquire leadership skills, and really blossom as human beings through taiko. It’s true that taiko was probably one of the many reasons the person was successful. However, think of the combined physical, mental health, social and emotional benefits. It’s easy to see how taiko can contribute to a person’s overall success.

Why I Enjoy Taiko

Personally, I love the way music makes me feel.  When I get to be a part of amazing music, I feel like I’m connected to something greater than just myself.  In addition to being connected to the society and culture, I feel connected to history as well.

Another thing that I love, is connecting with other musicians.  When you communicate with other musicians through music, it’s like you’re sharing a secret code with friends.  Maybe you’ve seen musicians smile at each other while they’re performing on stage.  It’s an amazing feeling when the music is good and your friend smiles at you, or you smile at your friend and they smile back at you.  It’s great when that happens, and I hope you get to experience it too!

These are just a few reasons why you might want to learn taiko.  Taiko is a great activity for both children and adults.  I hope taiko finds its way into your life.
